BACK TO BUSINESS!

After a lengthy 'extra winter break', the art room is finally up and running again!  Sixth graders were finally able to create a mono-print using their faces that they've carved into EZ-Cut Linoleum.  It's loosely based on prints created by Andy Warhol; something that the kids will be discussing in the weeks to come.
Print by Nathan Zweizig
Print by Jewely Livingston
The sixth graders will make any final revisions to this project next week (or the week after in some cases...) and then move on to this year's clay project which is sure to be a hit!  I know I can't wait to get "SLAMMING" on it!

WINTER BREAK V2.0

An empty classroom...is a lonely classroom!  Hope everyone is enjoying "Winter Break V2.0"!  Hope to see all the kids' smiling faces soon!

...OH!...and sixth graders...I hope you're taking this extended time off to get started on those 'zines!  I know they're not due until March 7th...but now would be a GREAT time to get them started!

Stay warm, everyone!!!

6th Grade Independent Art Homework Project
"CREATE A 'ZINE"

WHAT IS AN INDEPENDENT ART PROJECT?
An Independent Art Project is a project that you complete independently, on your own, outside of the art classroom.  It is an opportunity for you to express ideas that you have an interest in.  Your independent art project is to create a ‘zine.  We will create a blank ‘zine together in class, and the rest is up to you!

WHAT IS A ZINE?
Zines (short for magazine) are inexpensive forms of expression, usually made by hand, and based on any subject.  They’re like mini-magazines or hand-made books and their content can be historical, contemporary, personal or even comic books, story books, or poems.
These mini-magazines are not a new idea.  They’ve been around for years under different names such as chapbooks, pamphlets, and flyers.  Creative people have enjoyed expressing their independent ideas in words and images in this homemade book form that can be duplicated and shared with others.

OKAY…SO WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR MY ‘ZINE?
Your ‘zine must contain the following elements with each element worth 10 points towards a final grade.  (1) Title Page: The title page must contain a title to your ‘zine AND your name!  (2) Theme/Contentl: Your ‘zine content must match the title of your ‘zine throughout the entire project.  For example, if your ‘zine is titled “How to Draw a Dragon”, you shouldn’t have a page explaining why you eat cinnamon rolls for breakfast on Saturday morning.  (3) Creative Use of Visuals (Pictures): Each page of your ‘zine should include pictures.  How you include your pictures is up to you, but do so creatively.  And don’t forget about your ‘back cover’  (4) Creative Use of Text: Each page of your ‘zine should include text as well.  So…how will you creatively incorporate words and text with your images?  And finally, (5) Overall Creativity and Effort: How much time and care did you put into the creation of your ‘zine.  The ‘zine is worth a total of 50 points..

ANYTHING ELSE?
One last thing…all 6th grade ‘zines are due on FRIDAY, MARCH 7TH!  Any ‘zine turned in after the March 7th due date will lose 3 points per day late (not counting weekends).  You have the entire third nine weeks to work on and complete the project!  DO NOT wait to start the project two days before it is due.  You may turn your completed project in to me at any time!!!  If you finish early, turn it in early!

That’s it!!!  Good luck…have fun…and if you have any questions, or would like to talk about your idea, just come see me.  I’ll do my best to help!

GOODBYE FIRST SEMESTER...
...HELLO SECOND!

I've never had the experience of 'switching classes' in the middle of the school year like this, however now being the only art teacher at Creekview, this is the challenge that has been laid before me.  Sadly, my time with the 5th grade green and yellow teams has come to an end.  Which means that for the remainder of the year I'll get to spend some time with the 5th grade blue and purple teams.  It's bittersweet as I was really just getting to know some of the kids on the green and yellow team classes, but at the same time exciting because now I have a palette of brand new faces eager and ready to create some amazing art.  And while not every project for the blue and purple teams will be exactly the same as the green and yellow, the overall art concepts will be identical.  So...don't expect to see the same 'ol 'stuff' being created this time around.  There's a little modification and adaptation for this second semester.  Visit often, and you may just catch a glimpse.
