6th Grade Independent Art Homework Project
"CREATE A 'ZINE"

WHAT IS AN INDEPENDENT ART PROJECT?
An Independent Art Project is a project that you complete independently, on your own, outside of the art classroom.  It is an opportunity for you to express ideas that you have an interest in.  Your independent art project is to create a ‘zine.  We will create a blank ‘zine together in class, and the rest is up to you!

WHAT IS A ZINE?
Zines (short for magazine) are inexpensive forms of expression, usually made by hand, and based on any subject.  They’re like mini-magazines or hand-made books and their content can be historical, contemporary, personal or even comic books, story books, or poems.
These mini-magazines are not a new idea.  They’ve been around for years under different names such as chapbooks, pamphlets, and flyers.  Creative people have enjoyed expressing their independent ideas in words and images in this homemade book form that can be duplicated and shared with others.

OKAY…SO WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR MY ‘ZINE?
Your ‘zine must contain the following elements with each element worth 10 points towards a final grade.  (1) Title Page: The title page must contain a title to your ‘zine AND your name!  (2) Theme/Contentl: Your ‘zine content must match the title of your ‘zine throughout the entire project.  For example, if your ‘zine is titled “How to Draw a Dragon”, you shouldn’t have a page explaining why you eat cinnamon rolls for breakfast on Saturday morning.  (3) Creative Use of Visuals (Pictures): Each page of your ‘zine should include pictures.  How you include your pictures is up to you, but do so creatively.  And don’t forget about your ‘back cover’  (4) Creative Use of Text: Each page of your ‘zine should include text as well.  So…how will you creatively incorporate words and text with your images?  And finally, (5) Overall Creativity and Effort: How much time and care did you put into the creation of your ‘zine.  The ‘zine is worth a total of 50 points..

ANYTHING ELSE?
One last thing…all 6th grade ‘zines are due on FRIDAY, MARCH 7TH!  Any ‘zine turned in after the March 7th due date will lose 3 points per day late (not counting weekends).  You have the entire third nine weeks to work on and complete the project!  DO NOT wait to start the project two days before it is due.  You may turn your completed project in to me at any time!!!  If you finish early, turn it in early!

That’s it!!!  Good luck…have fun…and if you have any questions, or would like to talk about your idea, just come see me.  I’ll do my best to help!
