Students from Mrs. Gould's fifth grade class work on sculpting gargoyles from ceramic clay!
My second semester fifth grade classes are busy finishing up their ceramic gargoyles this week. Originally created to be used as a 'gutter system' on Gothic architecture and cathedrals, gargoyles represent some of the greatest achievments of stone sculputors from the 14th-16th centuries. Students are mounting the pinch pot gargoyle heads on a slab base and then have the option of making theirs purely decorative or an actual water spitter. The projects will need to dry for a few weeks before they're fired in the kiln. We will then glaze them, refire them and they'll be ready for display. The kids are LOVING this project!!! |
